GFR11 | Meet the designers – Janie Marlowe, designer of JANE
When did you join SL and why?
I joined Second Life® in the Spring of 2005. Prior to that I had been an avid There.com player and designer. A close friend convinced me that Second Life had so much more to offer than ‘There.’ It only took a couple of log-ins to see he was right and I never went back.
How did you get into content creation for SL residents?
Originally, I began making clothing as a hobby for avatars in the offline version of The Sims. The joy I found in that soon led to becoming a content creator in another virtual world, and upon my first log in to Second Life, I had high hopes of transferring my collection here. With the help of the same friend who convinced me to visit Second Life in first, I had a tiny, little shop up and running within a month.
How would you describe your shop?
I love casual, flirtatious fashion in both Second Life and my first life. I tend to make items that I would wear on the other side of the monitor – feminine, comfortable and fun.
Front Row is an event supporting Relay For Life® of SL. Why does it matter for you to participate?
It’s unfortunate but true to say that cancer will likely affect everyone, worldwide on some level. I’ve been involved with Second Life’s efforts to raise money for Relay For Life since the first clothing fair simply because it’s an excellent way for those of us fortunate enough to work in Second Life to give something back.
What would you like to say to those who are discovering you through this interview?
If you visit JANE and purchase nothing at all, please at least consider picking up the two donation items to support this event. It’s a very small price to pay for a very big cause.
Did Second Life change your life?
Second Life changed everything. I don’t know many people who have the good fortune to be doing exactly the thing they love most and from the comfort of their own home. There are ups and there are downs but in the end I believe we should all be endlessly thankful for the oppurtunities Second Life has given us and that, right there, is why it is so important to find ways to give a little back to the community and causes such as Relay for Life.
